Course Explanations - Original Course Decisions

Botany – I chose Botany to demonstrate how plants are connected to society. Plants are important to explaining how society functions and I believe that Environmental Science as well as Anthropology requires and understanding of plants and how people use plants to survive and functions. I will be connecting botany with a Plants and Society class (BIDI).

Environmental Planning – I chose to add Environmental Planning to my course contract to better understand the natural environment. Taking this class will help me use tools and methods to respectfully attend to the natural environment. This class will also help me demonstrate to others how to do the same.

Environment and Society – Environment and Society is included because there can be a direct connection between the natural environment and today’s society. I believe that after taking this class, I will be able to demonstrate to others how they connect, and the environmental issues that come along with society. This class will connect environmental science and anthropology since it has aspects of both.

Introduction to Permaculture – Permaculture is included in my course contract because it can help me develop a better understanding of how populations and agriculture can affect the environment. This class would connect more to my understanding of environmental science.

Environmental Anthropology – Environmental Anthropology is also my program title, and when I found out that it was a class here at PSU, it made sense to add it to my course contract. This class will expand my understanding of how society thrives or fails based of the environment. Environmental Anthropology will connect between both environmental science and anthropology as it has aspects of both.

Introduction to Environmental Science and Policy I – Intro to ESP will help me develop a better understanding of the environment as a whole and will give me a foundation for environmental science. This class will explain how humans have an effect on the environment, which also can connect to anthropology.

Foundations of Anthropology – Foundations of Anthropology is included in my course contract to get a better understanding of anthropology as a whole and as a foundation for my understanding. Anthropology is connected to environmental science since the course teaches about sustainability and other aspects that can be connected together. I can connect this to environmental science because of how humans have affected the natural environment and how they have survived based on sustainability.

Foundations of Sociology – I have included Foundations of Sociology as a foundation to develop my understanding of how society functions. To learn more about the science behind society, I need a sociology class to learn more about society and the current issues society is facing. Sociology connects more to anthropology considering it also studies people and how they function, but more from earlier years than current. I will be able to use this to learn how to change the current environmental issues.

Wealth and Poverty – Wealth and Poverty has a similar explanation to Foundations of Sociology in how it will develop my understanding of how society functions, but not only in the United States. Wealth and Poverty focuses on the US and abroad, so it is able to expand my understanding of society further. With these classes, I can connect it to how society affects the environment.

Environment and Health – Environment and Health is included in my course contract considering it is a direct correlation of how humans interact with the environment. This class can help me in the long run because learning about how humans interact with the environment and how this can affect society can connect to anthropology as well as environmental science.

Environmental Outreach & Communication – Environmental Outreach and Communication is a part of my course contract to help my communication skills. I am going to take this class to develop communication skills in the environmental world and to demonstrate to others the science behind society. This class can be connected to environmental science since this is a class in Environmental Science and Policy.

Sociology of Race and Ethnicity – Race and Ethnicity is included in my course contract because recently with the issues the world has been dealing with, race equality organizations have been stepping in to work on the climate and environmental issues. It is also helpful to know what everyone in society is going through to fully understand society as a whole rather than just one race/ethnic group. This class will correlate with anthropology further in my studies about people and the environment.
